JOB PURPOSE

The Technical Skills Trainer leads all technical training interventions for the sourcing units and is necessarily an experienced mechanical and/or electrical and working towards control & automation technician trade with an excellent ability to Teach, Facilitate, Coach and Mentor. 

The skills trainer will coordinate and deliver course training for all technical levels and developing operators, technical operators, and apprentices in accordance with Unilever curriculum requirements. They will liaise with other training providers where it is advantageous to use their capabilities. 

Within the factories, the skills trainer will continue to support the development and progression of trained technicians, Artisans, Operators and technical operators through the skills audit and Operational training interventions will be varied, but often involve legislative safety and hazard awareness training, and loss-based training.

Additionally, the skills trainer will provide advice and measuring for the recruitment of technical skills to the sourcing units.  The skills trainer is responsible for the proper maintenance and safe running of on-site training facilities (Unilever Training Center) and materials.

WHAT WILL YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES BE

  • Engineering Technical Training Support – Able to Teach, Facilitate, Coach and Mentor a minimum of mechanical and electrical engineering skills.  An inspirational teaching approach is a guiding requirement for the role, including developing the Training Material and record keeping.
  • Skills capability developed on site (For Operators, Technical Operators, Machine Specialist, ICE Technicians and Artisans)
  • Execution of training strategy and associated action plans to address training/competence and Developmental needs.
  • Maintenance of Technical Skills Matrix and assessment records.
  • Capturing of technical training on LMS platform
  • Populate the WSP & ATR for Technical training.
  • Populate training spend on BBBEE tracker for technical training.
  • Ensuring site compliance to training standards, including development of training & Assessment tools.
  • Capabilities modules developed and facilitated onsite for all Technical Training
  • Workplace Hazards - Full knowledge of workplace and hazards within it.  Utilize all appropriate safety and environmental procedures for people, processes, materials, products, and equipment relevant to the task.
  • Environment – Ensure training supports the reduction of environmental impacts and costs associated with utilities, chemicals and product and operational wastes through maximizing eco-efficient operation.
  • Quality - Ensure that technical skills within the sourcing unit are sufficient to protect Quality standards.
  • Leadership – As a prominent Technical Leader promote the development of highly effective teams linking the importance of technical competence with wider leadership qualities and skills, communication, integrity, commitment etc.  Demonstrate an ability to lead engineering improvement using excellent engineering knowledge and applied logic.
  • Continuous Improvement – Conduct technical assessments and audits of employee’s technical skills.   Through gap analysis and wider coaching techniques ensure employees’ technical skills meet factories priorities and support the eradication of losses.
  • Problem Solving – Develop employee skills in identifying, prioritising, and addressing problems.  Use and instruct on the full range of problem-solving tools and techniques that eliminate recurrence in line with UMS standards.
  • Teach, Facilitate, Coach, Mentor- Delivers formal technical teaching/facilitate in the classroom, which is supported by active on the job coaching and mentoring for longer term development.
  • Business Awareness – Understands the need to meet changing demands and the role of marketing and product innovation in growing the business; can link this knowledge to employee training.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

Experiences & Qualifications

  • Diploma / N6 in Mechanical and or Electrical
  • Trade Tested Artisan Mechanical, Electrical or Millwright
  • Accredited or Working towards Assessor, Facilitator and Material design and development.
  • 5 years working experience as an artisan.
  • 3 years Factory Training experience in a Technical/ FMCG/ Manufacturing environment will be an added advantage.
  • Strong coaching and communication skills supporting some instructional experience in a previous role.  Must display an ability to engage and influence.
  • Proven analytical skills.
  • WCM/TPM/ Lean Manufacturing/UMS Continuous Improvement mindset.
  • Must have solid experience identifying and implementing training programs. Must have a wealth of experience with identifying training gaps and demonstrating how these gaps are to be closed.
  • Must be proficient with leading technical training agendas
  • Must have proven track record on the impact of focused Programme and Development – use of training methodologies i.e. how this has improved productivity
  • Must have experience with starting up and implementing technical Training/ Learning and Development systems, ability to generate reports.
  • Must have depth across technical Training Analysis
  • Strong understanding of Unions (Unionised environment) 
  • Mechanical areas of expertise include:
  • Mechanisms and motion and Condition Based Monitoring.
  • Materials and tribology.
  • Process Engineering (e.g. Pumps, Valves, Pipework, Vessels, Agitators etc).
  • Electrical areas of expertise include:
  • Electrical control circuits.
  • Calibration.
  • Hazardous Area Equipment and Hazards Specific to Operation.
  • Remove and replace major electrical components (such as motors, switch/control gear).
