Job Description

• Required outputs: Functional
• Must follow instructions from the artisan/management, and be able to carry out daily duties without supervision.

• Prepare equipment that is to be repaired by the Boilermaker.
• Prepare joints flange faces by scraping, hand wire brushing using power tools to ensure that surfaces satisfy for the correct jointing.

• Prepare equipment for use and ensure correct tools are available for the job.
• Ensure that oxygen and Acetylene bottles are full and replaced when empty.
• Will be required to fetch cutting torches and collect pneumatic power tools, ensuring that the hoses, and fittings are in good condition and available when required.

• Prepare portable/electrical equipment for use when necessary and report any defects to the Boilermaker/Artisan/Superintendent
• Assists Boiler maker & Artisan with minor rigging work, obtain slings and chain blocks and must be able to use the lifting equipment safely
• Priority is to keep work place clean, and tidy at all times, that is in plant areas and workshops, oil stores etc.

• Clearing all scrap material after work is complete and discarding it in the recycle bins provided in the work area.

• Observe and report unsafe conditions to the Boilermaker and Utilities Maintenance Fitters, Supervision.
• Assist the Boilermaker & Fitter Artisan when additional labour is required that’s to position pipework, machinery, equipment etc.

• Must know tools and spares kept in the storeroom.
• Must report any irregularities encountered on the plant and workshop to the Boilermaker & Superintendent
• Might be required to collect tools, and equipment from APS Main stores.
• Basic Welding and setting up of welding machines ( Co2, Arc welder Argon)
• Basic Marking off of material for cutting
• Be able to work standby duties with the Utilities Maintenance fitter
• Basic Oxy/ Acetylene cutting
• Be able to use power tools and marking tools (Grinders, Drilling Machine etc.)

Qualifications & Experience

• Matric/Grade 12/Equivalent
• Boilermaker assistant /Workshop experience will be an advantage
• Must be able to work in all weather conditions, walking, climbing, lifting etc.
• Must be able to work around moving machinery, in the vicinity of very hot steam pipes, working at heights and work in confined spaces.

• Must be able to work in very hot conditions and adhere to safety procedures.
• Ability to work standby and overtime as and when required
• Must be physically fit
• Driver’s license will be a benefit
