Job Purpose:
Performs activities/tasks associated with law enforcement, examination, testing and issuing of learner and driving licenses and roadworthiness certification through the application of applicable legislation.
Duties:
- Enforce the relevant traffic legislation.
- Keeping abreast with the latest amendments to legislation, by-laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Direct, divert, stop and control the flow of traffic by means of various methods and hand signals to communicate with drivers and pedestrians.
- Assess traffic situations and incidents to determine the relevant course of action to ensure road safety.
- Make public announcements with the loudhailer.
- Set up and perform routine checks, speed measuring equipment and enforcement of legislation.
- Attending to the documentation and notification procedures, serving of summons, and compliance orders/notices.
- Executing warrants of arrests and preparing statements.
- Provide safety support when needed, to the Anti Land Invasion team when they are dealing with the removal of illegal structures.
- Assess possible impoundment of vehicles in line with traffic regulations.
- Escort and/or arrange towing facilities to transport the impounded vehicle to the traffic dept/SAPD.
- Perform the necessary checks with the Assistant Superintendent needed for completion of the necessary documentation.
- Checking details of application received against identification and/or relevant supporting documents.
- Applying written/oral testing sequence, moderating results and establishing and informing applicants of outcomes.
- Performing eye testing of applicants for driver’s and learner’s licenses by using prescribed equipment.
- Ensuring that applicants meet the visual acuity required for the type of license applied for and completing image scanning sheets in accordance with laid down procedures. Conducting and/or approving the outcomes of specific tests (oral/written theoretical, practical, physical) and issuing licenses endorsing that requirements have been complied with. Conduct vehicle inspections in accordance with the National Road Traffic Act of 1996 and SANS: 10047 – 2009 (Edition 6). Determining mechanical roadworthiness of all codes of vehicles in accordance with road safety and traffic legislation.

Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12.
- Basic training qualification attained.
- Code EB Drivers' licence.
- No criminal record
- 2 - 5 years relevant experience.
Other Requirements:
Proficiency in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.
Preferred Requirements:
- Traffic Officer Diploma,
- Grade A: Examiner of driver's Licenses,
- Grade A: Examiner of Vehicles Certificate.
