You will be working as Senior Mechanical Engineer and will be a part of the Motion Business Area for Service Division based in Alberton, South Africa. In this role you will be reporting to Engineering Manager and will be responsible for creating, modifying and analyzing the design of electric motors and generators, including specifications for their manufacturing, modification and installation on assignments of medium to high complexity using established solutions.
Your responsibilities
- Technical Contribution: Acting as lead mechanical designer and ensuring creation of customized designs with high priority on identification and control of hazards.

- Contributing to design reviews and verification following established Quality Assurance (QA) OR Quality Check (QC) process, providing feedback on design aspects and makes necessary modifications. Reversing engineers and optimizing designs to meet updated standards, incorporating new products, components and functionalities. Confirming design and component capabilities by implementing standard and, where necessary, developing testing methods, and testing properties. Creating and reviewing engineering drawings, specifications and plans required by manufacturing, fabrication or construction.

- Customer and Sales: Studying customer requirements to ensure sales tender and production compliance. Interacting with customers and providing technical guidance on design related queries. Providing engineering information by answering questions and requests. Presenting ABB as a professional organization in all interactions with the customer.
- Contract Management: Identifying and implementing variation requests to support contract claims. Taking contractual oversight of work within own area of responsibility, holding regular progress reviews, identifying and managing contract risks.
- Planning and Control: Creating work plans and cost estimates for work in one’s area of responsibility and ensuring quality deliverables on time and at targeted cost.
- Risk and Opportunity Management: Completing risk and opportunity assessments and the implementation of resulting actions in one’s area of responsibility. Reporting any contract OR quality OR program OR cost issues to management, along with recommendations, for resolution. Contributing to creation and implementation of strategies and plans to ensure that that Engineering teams are able to satisfy the current and future needs of the business.

- People Leadership and Development: Guiding, motivating, coaching, mentoring and developing less experienced designers on the translation of conceptual designs to engineering documentation, including drawings and calculations.
- Processes and Tools: Initiating and driving continuous improvement activities. Developing, implementing and improving relevant processes, policies and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness across the Engineering function. Ensuring local procedures align with ABB Group policies, processes and procedures and are correctly implemented. Promoting the reuse of effective technical solutions. Researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials.

Your background
- A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering NQF Level 7 and Professional Registration.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in similar role in a global company.
- Candidate must have have experience in electrical designing using available design tools (ANSYS Mechanical for CFD and FEA, Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD), BOM Creation and Management, Root-cause Analysis, Modal and Vibration Testing OR Analysis, Report Writing, and Presentation skills.
- Required strong background in rotating electric machines with experience in Mechanical Design of Slip ring and squirrel cage induction motors frame sized 250 to 1200,voltage 3.3 kV to 13.8kV including motors operating in explosive atmospheres.
- Familiarity with electrical engineering designs would be an added advantage.
- Required strong leadership and communication skill.
