The paediatric tuberculosis (TB) team at the Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC), which is situated in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Stellenbosch University, needs a reliable driver for their research unit located at Brooklyn Chest Hospital.
The appointment is based on a one-year temporary contract, with the possibility of further extension depending on the availability of research funding. The post will involve some travelling to study sites within the Western Cape Province to ensure that the participating children and their families attend the required clinic and home visits.
Duties
- Transporting staff, clients and visitors to and from the DTTC head office to the satellite sites (Khayelitsha Ubunye Unit and Brooklyn Chest Hospital), and around the communities where the project is run;

- Helping to trace participants within a community and maintaining accurate records of all tracing attempts;
- Transporting equipment and consumables between the DTTC head office and the study sites;
- Delivering and collecting any other items for the project (e.g. lab samples);
- Collecting and transporting clinical specimens as needed;
- Performing other driving duties as requested by the study team;
- Taking responsibility for the vehicle allocated to the incumbent, among other things, by maintaining the log book and by ensuring that the vehicle is regularly serviced;

Job Requirements

Grade 12;
- A valid driver’s licence and professional driving permit (PrDP);
- Substantial experience and a clean record as driver;
- Sound knowledge of Cape Town and environments;
- The ability to work in a team;
- A motivated disposition;

- Good written and verbal communication skills in English;

Recommendation
- Proficiency in at least one of the following languages in addition to English: isiXhosa and / or Afrikaans;
- At least two years’ experience in a research environment and of driving duties, as well as daily observed treatment support (DOTS) training;

GCP training.
