The Charge Sister will be responsible for co-ordinating improved quality nursing care by ensuring compliance to professional and ethical practice, Nursing act, 2005 (Act no.33 of 2005), all Healthcare legislation, Basic
Conditions of Employment, Policies and Procedures and Core Standards. The Charge Sister will also be responsible for monitoring and ensuring that nursing care and service delivery is implemented and practiced within a multi-disciplinary quality assurance team.
KEY WORK OUTPUT AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Financial: Strategic Planning, Budget and Stock

- Manage nursing hours /acuities and skill mix in such a way as to ensure cost effective, safe quality nursing care: permanent and temp nursing staff
- Ensure equipment need analysis is done for budget/capital expenditure purposes - new medical equipment,preventative services and repair and maintenance within legal specifications
- Ensure correct billing, stock management, month end, stock take and purchasing according to standard product list and minimum and maximum stock levels
Clinical Governance, OHS, Infection Control, Core Standards
- Investigate all negative clinical incidents and ensure appropriate capturing on IMS and reporting to National Nursing
- Monitor safety standards in accordance with the Machine and Occupational Safety Act (Act 6 of 1983)
- Report all accidents and incidents to Line Manager / Safety Representatives
- Ensure compliance with protocols, policies and Acts
- Ensure that all equipment is in working order and properly maintained
- Control of asset register
- Medical healthcare waste management and compliance to legal requirements
- Participation, representation and/or chair on committee’s e.g. Occupational Health and Safety
- Infection and prevention, Clinical Governance
Patient experience
- Ensure unit is providing safe, cost effective quality patient care in line with clinical governance strategy and evidence based practice
- Evaluation of the patient’s journey through patient experience and stakeholder input
- Evaluation of nursing quality indicators and clinical outcomes
- Effective communication with patients regarding their care

- Promotion of health and well being
- Ensuring the principles of infection prevention and all standard precautions are adhered to; ensure clean hygienic environment
- Promote good public relations with patients, relatives, visitors and sales representatives
- Identify quality improvement opportunities and ensure appropriate strategy and quality improvement initiatives are developed and measured
- Implementing group quality initiatives
Client relationship
- Ensure effective and formal communication: Charge Sister to attend Doctor’s meetings
- Ensure a professional environment at all times: Netcare way, Medicross Policies and Procedures
